Registered Practical Nurse - Outpatient Mental Health Services

Full-Time, Temporary (Approx. 6 months)
Owen Sound

Reporting to the Manager, Outpatient Mental Health Services, the RPN must be able to function independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team and be able to work cooperatively with multiple service providers.  The incumbent must be available to travel throughout the catchment area to deliver clinical services and meet the program needs of the outpatient clients. This position is initially targeted to work in our Assertive Community Treatment Team with the understanding that the RPN is a member of Outpatient Mental Health Services and as such may be assigned to another program as needed. 

Qualifications / Skills / Abilities:

Required:

  • Current Registration with the Ontario College of Nurses

  • Completion of a Psychiatric Nursing education program

  • Familiarity with principles and practice of  the Recovery Model as well as case management and rehabilitation

  • Psycho/social and mental status assessment skills

  • Ability to provide a wide range of counselling, support, advocacy and education services to family members and others of significance in the client’s life

  • Ability to communicate positively and professionally with family members, community providers and physicians

  • Minimum two years’ experience working in a multidisciplinary team in outpatient mental health

  • Knowledge of DSM-V and Mental Health Act

  • Extensive traveling required - Possession of a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and personal reliable vehicle

  • Ability to work closely as a member of a team and share responsibilities

  • Knowledge of medication side effects and coping strategies

  • Ability to co-ordinate multiple interests to provide quality patient care

  • Ability to problem solve and make effective decisions during highly stressful and potentially violent emergency situations

  • Experience in medication delivery

  • Willingness to learn new concepts and integrate them into practice

  • Two years recent experience working with SMI population

  • Ability to work all shifts

  • Recent satisfactory performance and attendance records

  • Knowledge of and adherence to GBHS ‘CARE’ Behaviours (Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, Excellence)

  • Advocates and supports a culture of patient safety and demonstrates an understanding of how the department service and assigned responsibilities contribute to overall patient safety at GBHS through patient safety knowledge, skills and attitudes
