Art Project – Momentos

  What is your CANADIAN MOMENT?

               September 30, 2017

Grey Bruce Health Services (GBHS) recognizes the uniqueness and diversity of the people and communities we serve.  As we celebrate Canada 150, GBHS would like to honour that diversity by hosting our first Community Art Project: Momentos.

We are calling on all artists to create a piece of art, and to submit it along with a short story reflecting your 'Canadian Moment'. The selected artwork will be hung throughout GBHS's six hospitals for one year, for all to enjoy!

A commemorative booklet will be created showcasing the selected work as a keepsake of this celebration, and a reminder of the healing power of art.

Entries will be juried for selection

What is your Canadian Moment?
Entries must include a short story of your Canadian Moment – and how you interpret that moment is up to you. The story must be a maximum of 150 words.  If selected, your story will be used in the commemorative booklet as well as on the label accompanying your artwork.

(GBHS reserves the right to edit stories.)

Please be mindful that the art will be displayed within the GBHS hospitals, and is intended to contribute to a healing, supportive environment for our patients, families and staff.

The available Hospital spaces are large, so we will favour artwork that is:

  • Min. 20" wide
  • Min. 28" high

  • Selected artists commit to the loan of their artwork for one year.
  • Entries must be original works designed by the person making the submission.
  • Artists must live, work or play within the GBHS catchment area (Counties of Bruce and Grey; Parts of Huron, Wellington, Dufferin and Simcoe) or have received care for themselves or a loved one in a GBHS Hospital (Lion's Head, Markdale, Meaford, Owen Sound, Southampton, Wiarton).
  • Artwork must be ready to display.  If artwork requires a frame to be displayed, then it must be submitted framed. If on canvas, must be submitted with finished sides, hooks and wire. No saw tooth hooks please. Submissions that are not ready-to-hang will not be accepted.

Momentos will be an excellent opportunity to showcase and promote the selected work of our local artists.  The selected work will be installed at each of our six hospitals, and potentially viewed by the thousands of people during the year-long period the art will be on loan.  (In total, our six hospitals have just under 100,000 patient visits annually, plus friends and family members who accompany our patients to hospital.)  Each piece of art will be displayed along with the artist's name, email and website if available, so that anyone interested in contacting the artist can do so. Any purchase inquiries will be directed to the artist.

In addition, our Momentos brochure, with photos of the selected work along with the artist's contact information will be available for our patients, visitors and staff for the year-long display period. The brochure will also be on our website.

We hope this visibility will benefit our local artists, as well as contribute to the healing environment of the GBHS hospitals.
